Anxiety is a very common condition and can have moderate to debilitating effects on your life. Anxiety can be described as feelings of nervousness, fear, apprehension and worry that doesn’t go away, or that keeps coming back.
While it is normal to feel anxious, worried or frightened at times, for instance, when you have an important event coming up, or when you are facing a major life decision, some people experience anxiety symptoms when there is no obvious cause (or that cause is no longer present). Others experience anxiety symptoms to a degree that interferes with their ability to cope and function in one or more aspects of their life.
Do you suffer from the symptoms of anxiety?
Anxiety is part of the fight-or-flight response. When we are anxious, our body is preparing to face a threat. Even if that threat is imagined, it triggers the same physical response.
Anxiety involves distressing or repeated negative thoughts and feelings. Anxiety affects the heartbeat, breathing, muscles, blood vessels, immune system and digestion.
Symptoms can include:
- Dizziness
- Feeling flushed
- Shortness of breath
- Heart palpitations
- Numbness or tingling
- Nausea
- Shaking
- Sweating
- The feeling of choking
- Chest pain
Types of anxiety
There are different types of anxiety, including:
- Generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) (chronic and exaggerated worry and tension that does not appear to be triggered by anything specific)
- Panic disorder (sudden and acute attacks of intense fear and apprehension, known as ‘panic attacks’)
- Social anxiety or social phobia (a fear of social environments and situations, including a fear of public speaking, or of socialising that can cause a person to isolate themselves from social settings)
- Specific Phobia (intense fear of a particular object or situation, where the person will go to great lengths to avoid the object of fear)
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (occurs following a traumatic experience)
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) (involves having recurrent unwanted and intrusive thoughts or fears that may seem illogical, but where the person carries out certain rituals or behaviours to try to relieve their anxiety)
